If you own a Moog Mother-32, keeping the firmware up to date is a simple but important way to ensure your semi-modular synth runs smoothly, reliably, and with the latest fixes. In this quick guide, I’ll show you how to update the firmware on Moog Mother-32 using a standard SysEx transfer app.
Why Update Moog Mother-32 Firmware?
Updating the firmware on your Mother-32 can:
- Fix bugs (timing issues, stability problems, small glitches)
- Improve performance and overall responsiveness
- Ensure your synth runs with the latest official Moog improvements
If you depend on your Mother-32 for studio work or live performance, it’s worth making sure you’re on the latest firmware version.
What You’ll Need
Before you start, make sure you have:
- Moog Mother-32 (powered by its original power supply)
- MIDI interface with a 5-pin DIN MIDI OUT
- MIDI cable (from your interface’s MIDI OUT to the Mother-32 MIDI IN)
- Firmware files from the official Moog website (ERASE file + main FIRMWARE file)
- SysEx transfer app (for example any standard “.syx” send utility for your OS)
You will also need a registered Moog account to access the latest firmware files for your Mother-32.
Step-by-Step: How to Update the Firmware on Moog Mother-32
Here’s the process I go through in the video. I recommend watching the tutorial alongside this checklist:
Register Your Mother-32 on the Moog Website
Go to Moog’s official website and create (or log into) your account. Register your Mother-32 using its serial number. This will give you access to the latest firmware downloads.
Download the Latest Firmware
Download the current Mother-32 firmware package from the Moog site. Inside you’ll find two important .syx files:
- ERASE file (used to clear the old firmware)
- FIRMWARE file (the new main firmware)
Open Your SysEx Transfer App
Launch your preferred SysEx utility on your computer. This is the app that will send the .syx files to your Mother-32 over MIDI.
Select the Correct MIDI Output
In the SysEx app, select your MIDI interface output that’s connected to the MIDI IN port on your Mother-32. Double-check this step — if the wrong port is selected, the synth won’t receive anything.
Send the ERASE File to Mother-32
First, load the ERASE .syx file into your SysEx app and start the transfer. Your Mother-32 will receive the data and clear the existing firmware area in memory.
Important: Don’t power off the synth or disconnect the MIDI cable during this process.
Send the FIRMWARE File to Mother-32
Once the ERASE step is complete, load the main FIRMWARE .syx file into your SysEx app and start the transfer. This can take a little while depending on your interface and buffer settings.
Again, make sure the power stays on and the MIDI connection is stable until the transfer is fully complete.
Reset the Mother-32
After the firmware file has been sent, follow Moog’s instructions to reset or reboot the Mother-32 so that the new firmware is properly initialized. In the video, I show exactly when and how I reset the unit.
Confirm the Firmware Version
Finally, check the firmware version on your Mother-32 (following the method described in the Moog documentation) to make sure the update was successful.
Pro Tips for a Smooth Update
- Use a direct MIDI connection from your interface to the Mother-32 (avoid MIDI thru chains and USB hubs).
- Close any other DAWs or MIDI tools that might interfere with the MIDI port.
- If the transfer fails, don’t panic — just restart the SysEx app and repeat the process from the ERASE step.
- Make sure your MIDI buffer and speed settings are not too aggressive. Slower, stable transfers are safer.

Thinking About Getting a Moog Mother-32?
If you don’t own one yet, the Moog Mother-32 is a fantastic way to step into the world of semi-modular synthesis. It works beautifully on its own or as the heart of a Eurorack system, with a powerful sequencer, classic Moog filter, and a flexible patchbay.
Final Thoughts
Updating the firmware on your Moog Mother-32 is a straightforward process once you’ve done it once or twice. With just a MIDI interface, a SysEx app, and the official Moog files, you can keep your synth stable, responsive, and up to date.
If you’re unsure about any step, I recommend watching the video tutorial and following along at your own pace. Once you see how it’s done, future updates will feel easy and routine.
